Eight Million Pets are Homeless in America

A survey by PetSmart Charities found that only 29% of the 3,000 Americans surveyed knew about pet homelessness, and 75% guessed there are less than one million homeless pets in the country, while the number is actually closer to eight million.

PetSmart Charities has created the People Saving Pets movement to help the efforts of local animal welfare organizations, and to bring awareness to the animal rescue cause. People Saving Pets provides information and online tools to help work towards the goal of ending pet homelessness.

Check out this article and the People Saving Pets website for more information - and spread the word!

Links to Pet Trust information

50 pets are euthanized every hour in U.S. animal shelters because their owners died and did not make arrangements for their continued care.

This tragedy is easily prevented with a Pet Trust, a legal agreement that provides for the care and maintenance of a pet in the event of its owner's death or disability.

There are many online resources available to educate yourself on Pet Trusts. Please visit them and make the important decision to create one for your animal.

Toto

Meet Toto, a sweet, beautiful 7-year-old cat. She loves curling up next to her owner and might even venture onto your lap, depending on her mood! She is happy to be petted and to sleep next to you. She's a bit vocal, especially when you first get home - she likes to talk! Her owner had to give her up because of extreme allergies and is broken-hearted about it. Don't miss this chance to have a calm, loving companion and friend.

Precious

Precious is six-years-old, healthy, has tested negative for any problem conditions and is spayed. She is ready to go to a new, loving home. Precious was mistreated by her original owners, but her foster mom has made her feel healthy and happy. She would be best as an only cat, possibly with a kitten or gentle animal companion.

Homemade Pet Food!

A recent New York Times article profiled pet owners who are increasingly making homemade, organic meals for their dogs and cats. One New York woman, Barbara Laino, runs workshops on healthy eating for both humans and their pets. She says, "We know processed foods are wrong for us. It has to be wrong for them. If you can feed yourself healthily and your children, then you can feed your pets healthily, too. It really isn’t that hard.”

Some experts have warned that homemade pet meals can lack necessary nutrients and calories, so talk to your vet before starting your pet on homemade food.
